The Avant Life Insurance Selection Tool
The Doctors’ Life Insurance Selection Tool (LIST) is an online comparison tool that puts a curated list of suitable providers at your fingertips. Simply enter your preferences, compare the features and price of shortlisted policies and pick the one that is right for you.

Here's how it works
- Compare. Enter your cover preferences in the Doctors' LIST to get an instant shortlist of leading life insurance policies that may be available for you.
- Select. Having compared products, select the one that's right for you and your family.
- Apply. It's fast and easy to apply over the phone - we'll take care of the rest.
At Avant, we’ve done the hard work for you by searching the market for life insurance providers that offer products we think doctors will value and added these to the LIST. Only those that met our strict criteria made the LIST. Making it easy for you to compare, select and apply for life insurance cover.
Not sure how much cover you need?
Try the Life Insurance Needs Calculator
This calculator helps provide an estimate of what you may currently need for life insurance, critical illness, total and permanent disablement (TPD) and income protection.
Sickness and Injury
We looked for life insurance products that include cover for injury or sickness related to past sicknesses or injuries, as long as they are disclosed and accepted by the insurer at the time of application.
Terminal Illness
We looked for life insurance products that offer a 12- or 24-month terminal illness benefit.
Future Insurability
We looked for life insurance products that provide the option to increase cover based on the occurrence of a defined event, without the need to undergo further medical underwriting.
Medical Advancements
Some life insurers in the industry offer policies that provide a guarantee to recognise other more advanced tests or treatments should medical advancements occur when assessing a claim. This was considered as part of our selection criteria and ensures that defined Trauma Cover medical conditions remain up to date.
Pricing
Different life insurance providers offer discounts or packaging options depending on the type of cover taken. These were taken into account within our selection criteria.
Underwriting Process and Standards
We considered turnaround times for applications, along with requirements for financial and medical details that form part of the underwriting process at time of application.
Yes, depending on the condition and the insurer. One of our life insurance consultants can help you complete a pre-assessment form that anonymously lists your medical conditions and seeks an initial assessment from the LIST insurers. This can help guide you on what policies may be available and the potential conditions before going through a full application and medical checks.
The LIST is a comparison service. We work with four leading insurers, selected for the cover and features we consider most relevant to doctors. These include needle stick injury cover and the ability to increase your cover as your income grows or your circumstances change.
We guide you through the entire process – from obtaining a quote, through to application and liaising with the insurer. We also work with our paramedical partners to arrange any medical results or reports required.
We know how busy doctors can be. That's why we advocate on your behalf – on both pricing and underwriting outcomes – to help you get the best possible offer.
Our strong relationships with leading insurers help us secure competitive cover options for our clients. We receive a commission from the insurer at no additional cost to you, and in many cases we're able to access discounts that can reduce the premium you would otherwise pay.
We complete an application with you. This can be done over the phone with us and your chosen insurer, or we can send you a link to complete the medical questionnaire yourself.
Based on the level of cover you apply for and your answers to the health and lifestyle questions, the insurer may ask you to complete medical checks or health exams or request a report from your doctor. We arrange all of this through our trusted paramedical partners at no cost to you.
There are some similarities. For example, a stroke could result in a traumatic event that leaves you unable to return to work permanently. In this case, you could receive both a trauma payout and a total and permanent disability (TPD) payout.
However, the two covers differ significantly in terms of what events are covered and their cost. Many claimable traumatic events can be recovered from, allowing the insured person to return to work. In these cases, a TPD claim would not apply.
No. If your application is approved and you accept the cover, your cover generally starts immediately. Subject to the policy terms, conditions and any applicable exclusions, a claim may generally be made from the commencement of cover if an insured event occurs.
If you also hold Trauma cover, note that some trauma conditions are subject to a survival period, which varies depending on the condition. If death occurs during the applicable survival period, the trauma benefit will not be payable. However, any Life Insurance benefit may still be payable in accordance with the policy terms and conditions.
Yes. If you have an existing life insurance policy with an insurer, you may be able to transfer the servicing rights to Avant (Doctors Financial Services). This generally involves contacting your insurer and providing your policy details together with an instruction to transfer servicing rights. Some insurers may require you to complete a specific form.
Once servicing rights have been transferred, we can assist with general enquiries and administrative matters relating to your policy.
If you would like your existing cover reviewed or would like recommendations that take into account your personal objectives, financial situation or needs, we can connect you with one of Avant’s qualified personal advisers.
Generally, the maximum age to apply for Life Insurance is 70. However, some insurers accept applications up to age 73.
*T&Cs including minimum spend & holding period apply. Cover must be in place no later than 31 July 2026 and acceptance is at the discretion of the insurer. The offer of a $750 eGift card is only available to Avant members and all other eligible persons will receive a $500 eGift card. See terms and conditions page for further details.
