Medico-legal notifications & assistance
The Avant team are here to support you throughout the process of dealing with an incident, such as a claim or complaint. To make a medico-legal notification or request assistance, complete the notification form. If you require medico-legal advice, you can contact the Medico-legal Advisory Service team.
Indemnity notifications & claims
If you think an issue might or will lead to a claim on your indemnity policy, tell us as soon as possible by completing the notification form. Some examples include:
• Informal patient complaints
• Events that may lead to a formal complaint or claim
• Complaints to an official body (e.g. Ahpra, Health complaints body, hospital)
• Claims for compensation
• Employment issues and training disputes
• Coronial matters
• Medicare issues

Medico-legal Advisory Service
If you require medico-legal assistance, please call our Medico-legal Advisory Service team on 1800 128 268 during regular business hours (8.30am - 5pm in each state and territory). For urgent enquiries, you can call after hours and on weekends.
Please note depending on the nature of your enquiry, you may be advised to complete the Indemnity notification & claims form.
You should notify us if a patient suffers a complication from treatment, or if it appears that an incident (an act, error or omission in relation to providing healthcare) may lead to a claim or complaint against you.
By itself, a notification has no adverse impact on your claims history.

You should notify us as soon as possible if you receive notice of any civil or criminal action against you, or a formal complaint from an official body (e.g. Ahpra, health complaints body, hospital).
- Check the time the response is due.
- Please arrange to obtain copies of relevant medical records relating to the matter.
- Please do not respond to any lawyer until you have obtained advice from Avant.
- If a response is required, start preparing a draft, but do not let this delay you in contacting us.
