Psychiatrists
Psychiatrists choose Avant’s unrivalled protection and specialty expertise, to practise with confidence
As Australia’s leading doctors’ mutual, no one has a better understanding of the specific risks you face, or the protection you need to safeguard your career.
The Avant Difference
Being member-owned means we only serve our members, not shareholders, supporting them to practise safely with unrivalled defence, expert risk advice, industry-leading insights and educational resources.
Our claims insights highlighted that in a year, one in eight Avant psychiatrist members1 faced a situation requiring them to make a claim on their insurance. We found that practitioner behaviours, patient records and medication-related issues were the main types of allegations2.
Avant supports psychiatrist members to reduce risk and protect their reputation, so they can focus on providing excellent patient care. We also reward member loyalty. How?

Building your resilience shield
Avant held an evening with former Army Major and Regimental Medical Officer with the Commandos and SAS, Dr Dan Pronk. Dan talks about his experiences working in the field, where he practised the science of medicine under the toughest conditions.
The importance of keeping it professional: avoiding boundary violations
A UK case involving a psychiatry registrar illustrates the potential for professional and patient harm when a professional boundary is crossed.
More than a MDO
Avant supports members professionally, through medical indemnity insurance, and personally, with our range of products tailored for doctors, including travel cover, health insurance as well as business protection.
We also take our responsibility to speak up for members seriously. As a mutual, advocating for members’ interests is a core activity. We do this through negotiation with key stakeholders including governments, statutory bodies and regulatory authorities, using the power of our 80,000 members** to form a loud and credible voice.

This was one of the most important and vulnerable moments in my entire career, but at all times the team across the Avant system supported me comprehensively. I had tended to think that I was merely subscribed to a big impersonal insurance mob ... but my experience was the complete opposite. I am so glad I am with Avant.

^The Retirement Reward Plan (RRP) reflects the current policy of the Board for determining which members of Avant are eligible to participate in the RRP and any Retirement Reward Dividends declared by Avant. The RRP is entirely at the discretion of the Board and no member will be eligible to receive a Retirement Reward Dividend until such time as the Board declares a dividend in favour of that member. The RRP is subject to change, suspension or termination by the Board at any time.
^^Not all members are eligible for a Loyalty Reward Plan (LRP) reward. Members not eligible include medical students, interns, RMOs and DITs and members who have their professional indemnity policy purchased on their behalf under a corporate group arrangement. However, membership years as an intern, RMO or DIT will be included in tenure calculations. The provision of an LRP reward will be determined by the Avant Insurance Board’s annual assessment of the quality of Avant’s financial performance.
~Discounts do not apply to previous or existing members of the Getting Started in Private Practice (GSIPP) scheme and only apply from the first year a member becomes eligible and subject to eligibility rules.
